Council Meeting – 2nd January 1895
Great Longstone & Holme Parish Council
First Meeting of the Parish Council held on Wednesday, 2nd January 1895
Present:
Messrs Charles Herbert Buzzard, Arthur Bates, Charles Johnson, Samuel Johnson, James Orr, and Henry Arthur Shenton.
1. The Statutory Declaration of acceptance of office as Parish Councillor was signed by each of the above names.
2. On the motion of Mr. Bates seconded by Mr. Shenton, Mr. Samuel Johnson was appointed provisional Chairman.
3. On the motion of Mr. Shenton seconded by Mr. Charles Johnson, Mr. Bates was elected Chairman of the Council.
4. On the motion of Mr. Charles Johnson seconded by James Orr, Mr. Shenton was elected Vice Chairman of the Council.
5. An offer having been made by Mr. A. J. Adams, the Manager of Crompton and Evans Union Bank at Bakewell, to act as Treasurer to the Council, it was resolved that Mr. Sam Johnson ascertain from Mr. Adams on what terms he is prepared to act.
6. On the motion of Mr. Buzzard seconded by Mr. Shenton, Mr. Thomas Shimwell, Assistant Overseer, was appointed Clerk to the Council with an addition to his salary of £2–10–0 per annum, making together with his former salary as Assistant Overseer £22–10 per annum.
7. On the motion of Mr. Johnson seconded by Mr. C. Johnson, it was resolved that a demand be made forthwith upon the Overseers for the payment to the Chairman (pending the appointment of a Treasurer) of the sum of Fifteen Pounds. This demand was consequently prepared and signed at the meeting in the following form:
To Joseph Johnson and Isaac Hewitt, Overseers of the Parish of Great Longstone
You are hereby ordered and directed to pay to Arthur Bates, Great Longstone, on behalf of the Great Longstone Parish Council on the thirty-first day of January One Thousand Eight Hundred and Ninety-Five the sum of Fifteen Pounds from the Poor Rates of the Parish of Great Longstone towards the expenses of the said Parish Council, and to take the receipt of the said Arthur Bates endorsed on the back of this paper for the said sum of Fifteen Pounds.
Given under our hands at a meeting of the said Parish Council held on the second day of January 1895.

8. On the motion of Mr. Bates seconded by Mr. Shenton, it was resolved that Mr. Samuel Johnson and the Clerk be authorised to procure books, stationery, and whatever else they may deem necessary for the carrying on in a suitable manner of the business of the Council.
9. On the motion of Mr. Charles Johnson seconded by Mr. Orr, it was resolved that Mr. Buzzard and Mr. Shenton be a Committee to draw up Standing Orders for the regulation of the proceedings and business of the Council and Parish meetings, and to submit the same at the next meeting of the Council.
10. On the motion of Mr. Samuel Johnson seconded by Mr. Buzzard, it was resolved that the School Managers be respectfully informed that it is the wish of this Council to hold their meetings until further notice in the Schoolroom.
11. On the motion of Mr. Samuel Johnson seconded by Mr. Buzzard, the following resolution was adopted:
Whereas by the 17 sub-section 8 of the Local Government Act of 1894 the Parish Council is empowered to take possession of certain public books, writings, and papers of the Parish, and whereas it is thought possible that some such property may inadvertently have remained in the possession of the persons who have in previous years acted as Overseers of this Parish instead of having been delivered in due course to their successors in office, it is hereby
Resolved: That a request be addressed to the late Overseers of this Parish still living, and to the known representatives of such of them as are dead, for the early delivery to this Council of any such books, writings, documents, and other like property as may be still in their possession.
12. On the motion of Mr. Bates seconded by Mr. Shenton, it was resolved that the Clerk be empowered to see that the School Room is properly prepared for the meetings of the Council and that the sum of one shilling be allowed as the expenses for each of such meetings.
13. Resolved that the next meeting of the Council be held on the 17th January at 7 o’clock in the evening in the Infants Schoolroom.
