One hundred and nineteenth meeting of the Parish Council
held in the Schoolroom Great Longstone
on the 1ˢᵗ July 1909.

Present
Mr A. W. J. Eyre (Chairman) Messrs J. Bridge, W. Orr, A. J. Skidmore & I. Shimwell (Clerk)

The minutes of the last meeting were read & confirmed.

Fire Extinguishing Appliance

The Clerk stated that he had written to the Midland Railway Company informing them of the Parish Council’s intention of providing a Fire Extinguishing Appliance estimated to cost about £36, and had stated that it was proposed to raise the funds voluntarily, by a levy of 2¼ᵈ in the £ on the rateable value of property that would be able to use the appliance, and enquired whether they were agreeable to the above proposal and if they would contribute accordingly, on their assessment of £2736.

The Clerk stated that he had met the Company’s Fire Superintendent at Longstone Station to inspect the water main and fire hydrants, and to obtain full particulars, he requested that the Parish Council would reconsider the matter at their next meeting as the Company consider that 2¼ᵈ in the £ on their Rateable Value is excessive and unfair, seeing that Longstone Station would be the only property for which the appliance could be of any service.

Mr Orr proposed and Mr Bridge seconded that the Clerk write to the Midland Railway Co stating that the Parish Council have reconsidered the question of raising funds for the purchase of a Fire Extinguishing Appliance and they think that in view of the Company’s liability in case of the issue of a Rate, that it would be reasonable if they pay ⅓ of the cost viz. £12 as their share.

The Clerk was also instructed to inform Mr Marples and Mr Cockerell the Duke of Devonshire’s agent, asking if they will subscribe towards the purchase.

Educational Lectures

It was decided to apply to the Derbyshire Education Committee for Form I which is required when forming a Local Committee, also for Form 18 which must be filled up when sending an application for a course of lectures on Veterinary Work.

Village Complaint

Complaints were made about the dangerous practise of boys throwing stones in the village. At the request of the Parish Council Mr Eyre consented to ask the Village Constable to try & prevent this if possible.
