The Fifty-fourth Meeting of the Parish Council was held in the School Room, Great Longstone, on Monday 17th April 1899.

Present:
Rev. Giles Andrew, Richard Coe, William Rogers Hill-Dixon, Henry Arthur Spanton, George Ward and J. Shimwell (Clerk).

All the members present signed the Declaration of Acceptance of Office as Parish Councillors for the Parish of Great Longstone.

Mr James Orr sent a notice to the meeting that he could not attend.

Chairman

Mr Spanton was unanimously elected Chairman pro tem on the motion of Mr Dixon seconded by Mr Ward.

The Rev. Giles Andrew was unanimously elected Chairman of the Parish Council for the ensuing year.

Mr Andrew then took the Chair.

The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed.

Appointment of Overseers

Mr Ward proposed and Mr Spanton seconded that Mr James Orr be appointed Overseer for the ensuing year.
Carried unanimously.

Mr Spanton proposed and Mr Coe seconded that Mr George Ward be appointed Overseer for the ensuing year.
Carried unanimously.

The necessary notices of these appointments were forthwith filled up and signed.

Assistant Overseer

The Clerk stated that in consequence of Mr Buzzard’s continued illness and his wife’s death, he had left the neighbourhood with the intention of not returning. It would therefore be necessary to appoint an Assistant Overseer to fill the vacancy occasioned by the resignation of Mr Buzzard.

Assistant Overseer – Applications

Mr Spanton then proposed and Mr Dixon seconded, and it was unanimously resolved that a notice be posted on the Public Notice Board inviting applications for the post of Assistant Overseer for this Parish. Such applications to be addressed to the Chairman of the Council and delivered to him at a meeting to be held on Friday the 28th inst. at 7.30 pm.

It was unanimously resolved that permission be given to Mr Orr to sign the Declaration of Acceptance of Office as Parish Councillor at the next meeting.

Wm. Wright’s Charity

The time having elapsed for which Mr J. Shimwell was appointed a Trustee of this Charity, it was on the motion of Mr Spanton seconded by Mr Dixon resolved unanimously that Mr J. Shimwell be re-elected as Trustee of the above Charity.
