The Fifty-third meeting of the Parish Council was held in the School Room, Great Longstone,
on Thursday 30th March 1899.

Present:
Mr S. Johnson (Chairman)
Messrs Dixon, J. Johnson, Spanton and J. Shimwell (Clerk).

The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed.

It was reported to the meeting that Mr Buzzard was ill and unable to perform his duties, when on the motion of Mr Spanton seconded by Mr Dixon it was unanimously resolved that Mr J. Shimwell be appointed as Assistant Overseer and Clerk to the Council until some other person be appointed to the office, at the same salary per annum as Mr Buzzard received.

The Clerk stated to the meeting that the D.P. Battery Co., who owned and occupied Lumford Mills, had not paid any rates and refused to pay on the ground that they had not yet begun to manufacture. The Clerk stated that he considered they were liable for some portion of the rates and asked for instructions. On the motion of Mr Dixon seconded by Mr Spanton it was unanimously resolved that the Clerk be instructed to take what proceedings he considered necessary to recover the rates.

It was resolved that cheques be drawn for the following items:

B. Fallow for stationery 14s 11d
Stamps 3s 6d
Fire relief at 15 meetings 15s 0d
4 years rent of Notice Board 2s 0d
Election expenses 9s 0d

The Clerk stated that the sum of £5 1s had been received from the Overseers, being Income Tax deducted from the Dole Meal account by the Duke of Devonshire.

The Clerk was directed to pay the same to the Treasurer to the Dole Meal account.
