Council Meeting – 28th April 1899
The Fifty-fifth Meeting of the Parish Council was held in the School Room, Great Longstone, on Friday 28th April 1899.
Present:
Rev. G. Andrew (Chairman)
Messrs R. Coe, James Orr, H. A. Spanton, G. Ward and J. Shimwell (Clerk).
The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed.
Mr James Orr signed a Declaration of Acceptance of Office as Parish Councillor.
Assistant Overseer
In accordance with notice posted on the Public Notice Board inviting applications for the post of Assistant Overseer and Clerk of the Parish Council, the following persons sent in written application for the post:
Mr Jesse Jupp, shoemaker, and Mr Isaac B. Shimwell, farmer.
It was unanimously resolved that Mr Isaac Benj. Shimwell be appointed as Assistant Overseer for the Parish of Great Longstone and Holme, to perform all the duties of an Overseer and Clerk of the Parish Council at a salary of twenty-two pounds ten shillings per annum, paid half-yearly.
The Clerk stated that Mr Radford (who was acting for Mr Buzzard) had handed over the papers and documents belonging to the Overseers and Parish Council.
Safe
The question of providing a safe for the custody of the Parish documents was brought forward, but no conclusion was passed.
Time of Meeting
It was decided to hold the meetings of the Council at seven o’clock in the evening.
Standing Orders
It was unanimously resolved that the Standing Orders passed on the 17th day of January 1895, with an amendment passed on June 27th 1895, be adopted by this Council.
The Clerk was directed to draw the attention of the County Surveyor to the condition of the Church Lane, and ask him to repair the same, so as to make a better thoroughfare to the Church.
