Council Meeting 5th November 1909
One hundred and twenty first meeting of the Parish Council
held at the residence of Mr Eyre “The Mount” Great Longstone
on the 5ᵗʰ of November 1909.
Present, Mr A. W. J. Eyre (Chairman) Messrs J. Bridge, W. Orr, A. J. Skidmore and I. Shimwell (Clerk)
The minutes of the last meeting were read and signed
Fire Extinguishing Appliance
Subscriptions of £5 each had been received from G. J. Marples Esq. and His Grace the Duke of Devonshire towards the fund for providing a fire extinguishing appliance. The Clerk stated that he had replied thanking them for their donations, and it was resolved that this Council record its appreciation of the above gifts.
The Clerk was instructed to write to the following persons asking for subscriptions towards the appliance viz – Messrs G. J. Furness, W. H. Wright, C. H. Armitage and to Mr C. H. Britton on behalf of Mrs Bradshaw.
It was decided that Mr Eyre and Mr Orr should ascertain the lengths of Hose required to reach the residences of Messrs G. J. Furness, W. H. Wright and C. H. Armitage as these were considered to be the greatest distance from the mains.
On hearing what lengths would be required the Clerk was instructed to apply for quotations from Messrs J. A. Ashton, Shand Mason, R. Makinson and Merryweather’s for the supply of the following appliances.
viz –
- 14 lengths of 50 feet, and 4 lengths of 25 feet, of 2½ inch 18 strand woven linen hose
- 18 pairs of 2½ inch Gunmetal Instantaneous hose unions,
- Wiring and leather bolstering unions on to hose
- Two 2½ inch Gunmetal double headed stand pipes (to fit Stones hydrants) with instantaneous connections and instantaneous swivel tops.
- Two 2½ inch Turners Patent Instantaneous Hand pipes, one fitted with spray
- Hand cart to carry the above appliances
The Clerk was instructed to say to the firms quoting that if their prices are accepted they would be expected to send one of their men to give a demonstration when the appliances are delivered.
Cutting Trees
A letter was read from the County Surveyor requesting the Parish Council to prune or lop the trees in the village opposite the Cross.
It was decided that the matter be deferred.
