Parish Meeting — 28 December 1896

Editorial note: This special Parish Meeting was convened to consider the claim made by Mr G. T. Wright to ownership of the Gilder Stone Quarry, a matter which had caused concern among the ratepayers of Great Longstone.

Minutes of Parish Meeting held in the School Room, Great Longstone, on Monday, December 28th, 1896.

The chair was occupied by Mr James Orr, the Chairman of the Parish Council.

A good number of parochial electors were present, and Mr J. Taylor, Esq., solicitor of Bakewell, attended to watch the proceedings on behalf of G. T. Wright, Esq.

The meeting was called by public notice to consider the action of G. T. Wright, Esq., in regard to his claim to the Gilder Stone Quarry.

The Clerk, having read the notice convening the meeting, placed all the facts of the case before those present.

After Mr J. Taylor had explained Mr Wright’s views of the matter, a discussion followed. Finally, the following resolution was proposed by Mr Charles Johnson:

“That this meeting of the parishioners of Great Longstone requests the Parish Council to withstand any action which may be taken by Mr Wright to assert his claim to the Gilder Stone Quarry.”

This proposition, having been seconded by Mr A. Taylor, was carried nem. con.

Signed: James Orr, Chairman
