Parish Meeting – 20th November 1896

Parish Meeting — 20 November 1896

Editorial note: This meeting was convened to consider a proposal for a voluntary rate to fund a local water supply scheme for Great Longstone, following discussions between the Parish Council and the Rural District Council.

Minutes of the Assembly of the Parish Meeting held in the School Room, Great Longstone, on Friday, November 20th, 1896.

Present:
Mr James Orr, Chairman,
and a number of Parochial Electors and non-Electors.

The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed.

The Chairman then explained that the meeting had been called together to signify whether they would consent to pay a voluntary rate for a scheme of water supply to Great Longstone which had been forced on them by the action of the Rural District Council.

He further stated that the Parish Council had engaged Mr Leicester Saltaker, Water Finder, to come over and inspect the place, who had pointed out several places at which water in sufficient quantity could be found. But as the Parish Council had no power to levy a compulsory rate, this meeting had been called together to say whether they would be willing to pay a voluntary rate for the purpose.

The Clerk then read Mr Saltaker’s report (as entered on the minutes of the Parish Council). It was explained that they proposed to sink a well at one of the places indicated in the report, No. 2, the water from which would gravitate to every house in the village. The estimated cost of the necessary works was £760.

No resolution on the matter being moved, it was declared closed.

On the motion of Mr Wright, seconded by Mr Andrew, the following resolution was then adopted:

“That the following gentlemen (with power to add to their number) be appointed a Committee to get estimates from experienced well-sinkers and other information to assist the Parish Council in formulating a scheme to place before the Rural District Council, viz: Mr Orr, Mr Eyre, Mr Bates, Mr Dewsnapp and Mr Wright.”

Signed: James Orr, Chairman
