Council Meeting – 9th November 1897

Tuesday, November 9th, 1897

Thirty-eighth meeting of the Parish Council held in the School Room, Great Longstone,
on Tuesday, November 9th, 1897.

Present: Mr. S. Johnson (Chairman), Messrs. J. Orr, J. Johnson, H. A. Stanton, and I. Shimwell (Clerk).

The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed.

Gilder Quarry

The Clerk laid before the meeting a letter which he had received from Messrs. F. & F. Taylor of Bakewell, Solicitors acting for Mr. Wright, in the matter of the Gilder Stone Quarry, stating that they were quite ready to commence proceedings but as there were difficulties in the way they would like the Parish Council to appoint some solicitor to act for them. They could then consult together and arrange the best mode of bringing the action forward, and it might be a saving of expense to the Council, intimating that if the Council refused to appoint a solicitor, they might be compelled to commence proceedings in the High Court.

After the foregoing letter had been discussed, Mr. Stanton proposed that a solicitor be appointed. Mr. J. Johnson seconded and it was carried unanimously.

Mr. Stanton then proposed that Mr. A. Muir Wilson of Sheffield be requested to act for the Council; if he is unable or refuses, then that Mr. Potts of Stockport be seen, and failing him, Mr. Middleton of Chesterfield.

This was seconded by Mr. Orr and carried unanimously.

Signed: Samuel Johnson, Chairman
