Water Supply

The Clerk produced the following letter which he had received from Mr. Hawes, the Clerk to the Rural District Council.

Bakewell, May 3rd, 1897

Dear Sir,

Longstone Water Supply.

Referring to your letter of the 5th October last, in which the Great Longstone Parish Council ask to be allowed to devise a scheme of their own which they consider will be satisfactory to their own village and to the District Council as well, and also much less expensive.

I am directed to advert to the Rural District Council’s reply of the 8th October last, and their letter of the 24th February last, which was addressed to you on the subject, and to ask that the Parish Council will without further delay resubmit their plans and estimates to the Rural District Council.

The Special Sanitary Committee of the District Council will meet on the 17th inst., when, in the absence of the scheme promised by the Longstone Parish Council, instructions will probably be given to the District Council’s engineer to proceed with his scheme.

Yours truly,
Alf. Hawes
Clerk to the Bakewell Rural District Council

To I. Shimwell,
Clerk to the Parish Council,
Great Longstone.

After the foregoing letter had been duly considered, it was unanimously resolved on the motion of Mr. Orr, seconded by Mr. Furniss:

“That inasmuch as the Rural District Council in their letter of 24th February refuse to delegate their powers to the Longstone Parish Council for the purpose of providing a water supply for the village, they are precluded from acting in the matter; therefore it is now out of their hands.”

At the same time, the Council wished to remind the District Council that a sufficient supply for all purposes is already in existence and available.

Samuel Johnson, Chairman
