One hundred and twenty fourth meeting of the Parish Council
held at the residence of Mr Eyre “The Mount” Great Longstone
on the 28ᵗʰ Febᵧ 1910.

Present

Mr A. W. J. Eyre (Chairman) Messrs J. Bridge, W. Orr, A. J. Skidmore and J. Shimwell (Clerk)

The minutes of the last meeting were read and signed.

Fire Extinguishing Appliances

It was stated to the meeting that the Fire Extinguishing appliances and hose cart had arrived, and that they appeared quite satisfactory.

Mr Orr had kindly given permission for the appliances to be stored in their building facing the White Lion Inn, and it was decided that the Clerk write to Messrs Shand Mason & Co asking them to supply a “Fire Station” plate for fixing on door.

Mr Eyre explained that it had been omitted to order the name to be printed on hose cart, and as he had a favourable opportunity of having it done, he had instructed Mr Shephard to write Longstone Parish Council on side of cart.

It was considered advisable to select a Captain of the Fire Brigade and on the proposition of Mr Orr seconded by Mr Bridge it was unanimously decided to ask Mr Wm Nager to accept the voluntary position.

County Rate Basis

The Clerk of the County Council sent notice that it was proposed to alter the County Rate Basis, whereby the Parish of Great Longstone would be affected, and that a meeting of the County Rates Committee would be held at the County Hall, Derby on the 16ᵗʰ of March when they would be prepared to hear any objection from the Parish Council.

It was pointed out that the proposed amendment of the County Rate Basis would be £150 in excess of the assessable value appearing in the Great Longstone Valuation List.

It was proposed by Mr Eyre and seconded by Mr Skidmore that Mr Orr and the Clerk attend the above meeting, to make objection on the grounds stated.

Cutting Trees

A letter had been received from the County Surveyor stating that one of the trees near the Cross was prejudicial to the road and requesting that it be cut.

The Clerk was instructed to reply to the Surveyor saying that the Parish Council respectfully acknowledge his letter, and to state that as the trees were rather heavily cut about 3 years ago it would be detrimental from an ornamental point of view to cut them again.

It was decided to ask the Surveyor to meet them to inspect the tree in question.
