Council Meeting – 26th November 1896

Friday, November 26th, 1896

Twenty-seventh meeting of the Parish Council held in the School Room, Great Longstone, on Friday, November 26th, 1896.

Present: Mr James Orr, Chairman; Messrs Buzzard, Spanton, J. Johnson, S. Johnson, and T. Shimwell, Clerk.

The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed.

Mr Orr stated that the Public Meeting having been held respecting the water supply, and having voted against paying a voluntary rate, a Parish Committee had been formed. The Parish Council therefore could do nothing further in the matter.

He also stated that Mr Bataker had written for his money.

It was decided to let the matter stand over till the next meeting.

Wm Wright’s Charity

Mr Spanton produced the Amended Scheme in this matter, under which this Council were authorised to appoint two Trustees,
whereupon Messrs James Orr and T. Shimwell were unanimously elected Trustees of Wm Wright’s Charity.

It was decided by lot that T. Shimwell should retire at the end of 2 years.

Gilder Stone Quarry

It was reported to the meeting that Mr A. W. J. Eyre had purchased a heap of broken stone in Gilder Stone Quarry and had promised to pay tonnage for the same to Mr Wright, and was also intending to remove the same out of the Parish.

On the motion of Mr Spanton, seconded by Mr Buzzard, it was resolved that the Clerk be directed to write at once to Mr Eyre informing him that his action was compromising the Parish Council, that he had exceeded his rights and privileges in the matter, and to forbid him to pay tonnage for any stone he may require from Gilder Quarry, and that under no circumstances will they allow any stone to be removed out of the Parish.

The above matter was declared urgent.

All voted for the above proposition except Mr Orr who was neutral.
