Council Meeting – 20th January 1898

January 20th, 1898

Fortieth meeting of the Parish Council held in the School Room, Great Longstone,
on Thursday, January 20th, 1898, at 7 o’clock.

Present: Mr. S. Johnson (Chairman),
Messrs. Jameson, Jos. Johnson, P. J. Furniss, H. A. Spanton, J. Wood, and I. Shimwell (Clerk).

The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed.

The Clerk stated that he had received a communication from A. Muir Wilson, Esq., Solicitor, of Sheffield, in which he states that he has conferred with Mr. Wright’s solicitors with the Parish Council in regard to the Gilder Quarry case, and appointing Saturday the 22nd inst. at 12 o’clock, if convenient.
The Council decided to meet Mr. Wilson on Saturday the 22nd as suggested.

The following letter, which had been received by Mr. Stanton in answer to one that he had written to Mr. Cockerton, Clerk to the Bakewell Urban District Council, was read:

Bakewell, 8 Dec 1897
Bakewell Gas Bill

Dear Sir,

Referring to my letter to your Council through the Clerk respecting the proposal of this Council to include your township within the limits of supply, I forward herewith, for your Council’s information, a copy of the portion of the Bill for the protection of the Local Authorities for the time being of the districts adjoining the Urban District of Bakewell.
You will see that even if your own Parish Council decide at any future time to receive their gas from other Authorities, the Council would be compelled to see that portions of their works extend beyond the Labour District. This section is always reserved by Parliament, so that Authorities outside the promoters’ district are not prejudiced.

I shall be obliged by your reply to my first letter. If your Council would like the matter more fully explained, I should have pleasure in attending a meeting of your Council.

I should also state that the price of gas is always fixed by Parliament at what they consider reasonable.

Yours faithfully,
Vernon R. Cockerton

To: Mr. H. A. Stanton
