Great Longstone Parish Council
Minutes of Meeting held on Thursday, March 14th, 1895
Venue: The Schoolroom, Great Longstone
Present:
Arthur Bates (Chairman), James Orr, H. A. Stanton, Samuel Johnson, and Thomas Thornhill (Clerk).
Confirmation of Minutes
The minutes of the meeting held on 28th February were read and confirmed.
46. Parish Notice Board (Minute 34)
The Clerk stated that Mr. Booth had promised to have this ready in a couple of days, and the Chairman undertook to see Mr. Andrews in reference to the place in which it is to be fixed.
47. Parochial Charities (Minute 36)
Mr. Stanton reported that he and Mr. Orr had had an interview with the Vicar, who had promised to assist them in obtaining information respecting the Parochial Charities. The report of the Committee will be presented as soon as possible.
48. Rating of Small Tenements (Minute 41)
The motion of which Mr. Bates had given notice was as follows:
“The Assistant Overseer having stated that the occupiers of all the small tenements in the Township are separately rated, and that from time to time he finds it difficult and occasionally impossible to collect the rates from them.
He proposed — That the powers given to the Council by Section 6 (1)(a) of the Local Government Act, 1894, do first with operation and notice given to the owners of all the property rated at £8 and under, that in future they will be called upon to pay the rates subject to the allowances granted by the Act.”
The further consideration of this subject was, after some discussion, deferred.
49. Sanitary Matters (Minute 42)
The following resolution, of which Mr. Stanton gave notice at the last meeting, was moved by Mr. Stanton and seconded by Mr. Bates, and after discussion passed unanimously:
“That this Council view with great concern the inefficient and insufficient sanitary arrangements of some of the tenements in this village, and hereby (under Sec. 6(2) of the Local Government Act, 1894) direct the attention of the Rural District Council to the state of affairs, and call upon the said District Council to take without loss of time steps to remedy the evil.”
The Clerk was directed to forward a copy of the resolution to the Rural District Council.
50. Churchyard (Minute 43)
The motion of which Mr. Buzzard had given notice is as follows:
“It having been brought to the notice of one or more of the members of this Council that the Churchyard is now overcrowded with graves, and that some recent interments have been attended by sights and smells of an objectionable and unsanitary character.
Resolved — That a letter be addressed to the Vicar asking whether, in his opinion, the time has come when no further interments should be permitted within the present Churchyard.”
The resolution was moved in the unavoidable absence of Mr. Buzzard by the Chairman, and seconded by Mr. Stanton. In the course of the discussion, it was stated that in all probability the subject would be discussed at the next Vestry Meeting. It was therefore decided to defer the further consideration of the subject.

On the motion of Mr. Stanton, seconded by Mr. Johnson, it was resolved unanimously that a cheque for £3 2s 4d be drawn and applied to the payment of the following accounts:
