Council Meeting – 11th March 1897

Thursday, March 11th, 1897

The thirty-first meeting of the Parish Council was held in the School Room, Great Longstone,
on Thursday, March 11th, 1897.

Present:
Mr. James Orr (Chairman)
Messrs. C.H. Buzzard, A.W. Eyre, J. Johnson, S. Johnson, and I. Shimwell (Clerk)

The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed.

The Clerk stated that Mr. Wright was not willing to attend as a deputation with Mr. Eyre to the Rural District Council, so he had attended with Mr. Eyre, and that the following letter had been received from the Clerk respecting the result of the interview:

Bakewell Rural District Council
Bakewell, 24th February 1897

Dear Sir,
Great Longstone Water Supply
In reply to your letter of the 18th inst. and in reference to the interview which the deputation appointed by the Longstone Parish Council had with the Rural District Council on the 22nd inst. on the above-named subject, I am directed by the latter Council to state that they do not see their way to delegate their powers to the Parish Council for the purpose of making experimental borings for water, the cost of which in the event of failure would be chargeable as general expenses upon the whole of the Bakewell Rural District.

Adverting to your letter of the 5th October last and the Council’s reply thereto of the 8th October last, I am to enquire whether the Parish Council have abandoned their proposed scheme for a supply from the spring referred to in your letter. I am to repeat that the Rural District Council will give careful consideration to any schemes which may be submitted to them for inspection.

Yours truly,
Alf Hawes

After the foregoing letter had been read, it was decided to ascertain if possible whether it will be legal to raise the rate for Parish Council purposes for the object of sinking a well in order to obtain water.

It was decided to hold the Annual Assembly of the Parish Meeting on Wednesday, the 31st inst.

Dole Meal Charity

A cheque for £7 16s. 0d. was ordered to be drawn in favour of Mrs. E. Lowe in payment for the Dole Meal.
