One hundred and twenty eighth meeting of the Parish Council
held in the Schoolroom
Great Longstone on the 10th of June 1910.

Present: Mr A. W. J. Eyre (Chairman) Messrs J. Bridge, W. Orr & I. Shimwell (Clerk).

The minutes of the last meeting were read and signed.

The late King

As this was the first meeting of the Parish Council held since the death of the King, the Chairman moved a resolution seconded by Mr Orr and supported by Mr Bridge that the following tribute be placed in the minutes viz —

That this Council hereby record the great loss the nation has sustained by the sudden death of King Edward VII. As we all know the King was a great worker, he took an interest in everything in his Kingdom, more particularly did he strive for the peace of the world, and his name will go down to posterity as King Edward the peacemaker.

It is with no little pride that we remember his visits to Chatsworth, and how he expressed to his genial host the late Duke of Devonshire the great pleasure he had in visiting Derbyshire and the kind feelings he had towards the country people who used to gather to see him at the shooting parties at Chatsworth.

We also wish to extend our sympathy and loyal support to her most gracious Majesty Queen Alexandra the Queen Mother, and may the King of Kings support and comfort her in this her great & sudden bereavement.

Charity Accounts

As Mr Andrew had not complied with this Council’s request to give a more detailed account of the charities with which he is connected, it was proposed by Mr Orr and seconded by Mr Bridge that the Clerk write to the Charity Commissioners asking if we can legally demand the above details to be given.

School Manager

The County Council Education Committee having replied stating that Mr C. H. Armitage had been appointed County Council Representative manager of the Longstone & District School. It was proposed by Mr Eyre & seconded by Mr Orr that the Clerk write again to the Education Committee saying that their letter of the 8th of June had been brought before the Parish Council and they are very much surprised to be informed of the above appointment and if they will refer to our letter of the 21st April 1909 they will find that Mr J. Bridge had been nominated and they were quite under the impression that he was duly appointed.

Gilder Quarry

Complaints having been made that Henry Garratt had allowed his horses to stray in Gilder Quarry whereby they were trespassing.

It was decided that the Clerk write to him requesting that he discontinue the above trespass.

It was also stated that he had erected a shed in the quarry. The Clerk was instructed to inform him that if this is not removed within 7 days legal proceedings will be taken against him.

Fire Extinguishing Appliance

A Demonstration of the Fire Appliances took place on Saturday afternoon the 7th of May when Mr Forman from the firm of Shand Mason & Co. gave instruction to the members of the Fire Brigade in the working of the appliances.

The water was turned on by Mrs A. W. J. Eyre in the presence of a large gathering, several of the most distant and highest residences in the village were visited to test the appliances and supply of water, both of which proved to be quite satisfactory.

Afterwards Mr A. W. J. Eyre invited the members of the Parish Council and Fire Brigade to tea at the White Lion Hotel.

In the course of an address Mr Eyre said that the gathering to day would have been one of the brightest in the annals of our village, but for the great national calamity that has so suddenly fallen upon us in the lamentable death of King Edward VII and had it been possible the demonstration would have been postponed.

On the proposition of Mr Bridge seconded by Mr Orr it was decided to pay Messrs Shand Mason & Co’s A/c for supplying the Fire Appliances viz £50 13s 0d less £2 8s paid for Railway carriage.

The Clerk was instructed to say that the Parish Council are thoroughly satisfied with the appliances and to inform them that their representative Mr Forman gave some valuable information and instruction to the Fire Brigade.
