Great Longstone Parish Council
Minutes of Meeting held on Thursday, February 28th, 1895
Venue: The Schoolroom, Great Longstone
Present: Arthur Bates (Chairman), C. H. Buzzard, James Orr, H. A. Stanton, Samuel Johnson, and Thomas Thornhill (Clerk).
Confirmation of Minutes
The minutes of the meeting held on 31st January were read and confirmed.
34. Parish Notice Board (Minute 18 & 26)
The Clerk stated that Mr. Booth had seen the sketch and specification prepared by the Chairman, and would execute the work in agreement therewith.
35. Houseton Lane Head Trust Money (Minute 28)
The Chairman stated that he had not received any account of this fund from Mr. Thornhill. He had reminded him of it.
It was decided to let the matter stand over a little longer.
36. Parochial Charities (Minute 32)
On the motion of Mr. Stanton, seconded by Mr. Orr, it was unanimously resolved:
That a Committee be appointed to confer with the Vicar with regard to the origin, trusts, and management of such Parochial Charities as are at present vested in him, with a view to deciding what steps shall be taken by the Council to procure adequate representation upon the Managing Bodies of such Charities.
On the motion of Mr. Bates, seconded by Mr. Orr, it was unanimously resolved:
That Mr. Stanton be one of a Committee to carry out the foregoing resolution.
On the motion of Mr. Buzzard, seconded by Mr. Bates, it was unanimously resolved:
That Mr. James Orr be a member of the aforementioned Committee.
37. Gilder Stone Quarry and the Parish Award (Minute 31)
The Chairman produced the Parish Enclosure Award (1824) and also the Tithe Commutation Map (1847), obtained respectively from Mr. Wright and Mr. John Thornhill.
These were examined and discussed, and further consideration of the subject was deferred.
38. Communication from the Bakewell Rural District Council
The Chairman reported that he had received a circular letter asking for information required by the Select Committee on Distress, appointed by Parliament now in session.
The matter was marked as “Most Urgent”, and the Chairman had replied to the leading question that there was no exceptional distress at the present time in this township.
The Council agreed that this was the correct reply.
39. Allotments
The Chairman reported that he had distributed a number of leaflets amongst the labourers and others in the village containing information on the subject of allotments, and inviting those for whom the subject had any interest to communicate with him or any of the members of the Council.
Neither he nor any of the members had been as yet approached on the subject by any of the villagers.
40. Lighting the Village (Minutes 17 & 24)
On the motion of Mr. Orr, seconded by Mr. Buzzard, it was resolved (Mr. Johnson alone dissenting):
That it is desirable to recommend to the next Parish Meeting the adoption of the “Lighting and Watching Act”.
41. Small Tenements Rating Act
The Chairman gave notice of motion in reference to the adoption of the provisions of the Rating Act as regards the compounding for the rates of tenements of £8 annual value and under.
42. Sanitary Matters
Mr. Stanton gave notice that he would, at the next Council meeting, call attention to the inefficient and insufficient sanitary arrangements and accommodation of some of the tenements in the village, and move a resolution thereon.
43. Churchyard
Mr. Buzzard gave notice that he would, at the next Council meeting, draw attention to the state of the churchyard and move a resolution thereon.
44. Annual Assembly of the Parish Meeting
It was unanimously resolved:
That the Annual Assembly of the Parish Meeting be held on Thursday, March 28th.
45. Next Meeting
The next meeting of the Council was fixed for Thursday, 14th March.
