Parish Meeting – 4th December 1894

FIRST PARISH MEETING — GREAT LONGSTONE
School Room, Tuesday 4 December 1894, 7.00 pm
(Held under the Parish Councillors’ Election Order, 1894)

ATTENDANCE
About sixty electors and a few non-electors.
Overseers: Mr Joseph Johnson; Mr Isaac Bennett.
Assistant Overseer (acting as Clerk): Mr Thomas Shimwell.

NOTICE READ
The Assistant Overseer read the notice convening the meeting (dated 24 November 1894) and called for the election of a chairman.

CHAIRMAN ELECTED
Mr George T. Wright of Longstone Hall — unanimously elected.

CHAIRMAN’S STATEMENT
Explained that business was confined to electing a Parish Council of six members.
The election could be decided either by a show of hands at this meeting or by a poll at a later date.
He would call for nomination papers, examine and read them, then take votes (each elector to vote for up to six candidates).

NOMINATION PAPERS
Eighteen papers were submitted, containing fourteen nominees.
• Mr Arthur Bates was nominated three times.
• Mr Charles Herbert Buzzard and Mr Henry Arthur Spanton twice each.
Papers found correct and read to the meeting.

WITHDRAWALS
Rev. Giles Andrew withdrew his name.
Mr George T. Wright (as Chairman) also withdrew.

QUESTIONS
Time allowed for questions to candidates; none were asked.

Subject to a poll being demanded (and not withdrawn), the following were declared elected:

POLL DEMANDED
Mr G. S. Mitchell and Mr J. Bradwell demanded a poll.
The Chairman stated the poll would probably be held on the 18th inst., and closed the meeting.

APPENDIX — NOTICE OF PARISH MEETING (as read)
Parish of Great Longstone and Holme.
First Parish Meeting to be held at the School Room, Great Longstone, Tuesday 4 December 1894 at 7.00 pm.
Business: (1) Elect a Chairman for the Meeting. (2) Elect Parish Councillors.
Number of Councillors to be elected: six.
Nomination papers to be handed in at the meeting; a parochial elector may sign six nomination papers (no more). Forms available free of charge.

MEMORANDA

5 December 1894 — Names of twelve candidates and all nomination papers forwarded by the Assistant Overseer to Mr W. Leigh, Returning Officer, Bakewell, per requirements of the Local Government Board.

10 December 1894 — Mr George Hambleton withdrew; his name omitted from list for the poll.

11 December 1894 — Official notice of poll (12 noon–8 pm on the 18th) posted at Church Porch and elsewhere with names of eleven candidates.

18 December 1894 — Poll by ballot held at the School Room, Great Longstone; Mr Thomas B. Mellor of Bakewell acted as Deputy Returning Officer. Official return made to the Chairman and later posted by Mr Leigh.

21 December 1894 — Notice sent to newly elected Parish Councillors and the Assistant Overseer calling first Parish Council meeting for Wednesday 2 January 1895 at 7.30 pm (to elect a Chairman, appoint Clerk and Treasurer, and arrange funds for expenses). Signed: G. T. Wright, Chairman of the Parish Meeting.
