Council Meeting – 8th January 1897

Thursday, January 7th, 1897

Twenty-ninth meeting of the Parish Council held in the School Room, Great Longstone,
on Thursday, January 7th, 1897.

Present:  Mr. James Orr, Chairman, Messrs. Buzzard, Eyre, Jos. Johnson, Saml. Johnson, Stanton, and T. Shimwell, Clerk.

The minutes of the last meeting held on the 17th December were read and confirmed.

Gilder Stone Quarry

Mr. Orr stated that he had written to Mr. Taylor acknowledging the receipt of his letter respecting the Gilder Stone Quarry.

In accordance with the resolution passed at the last meeting of the Council, a public meeting of the Ratepayers had been held in the School Room on the 28th Dec. to consider the question of the Gilder Stone Quarry and whether the Parish Council should resist the action of Mr. Wright, who claims the quarry as part of the Longstone Hall Estate.

About 30 Ratepayers attended, and also F. & H. Taylor, Esqs., Solicitors of Bakewell, on behalf of Mr. Wright.

This matter was freely discussed, and a resolution was passed authorising the Parish Council to resist the claims of Mr. Wright to the Gilder Stone Quarry.

After the above statement had been made, a conversation ensued as to whether it was necessary for the Parish Council to take any immediate steps in the matter, when the following resolution was moved by Mr. J. Johnson and seconded by Mr. Buzzard:

“Seeing that the Parish Council still has possession of the Quarry, it is better to let the matter rest until some decisive action is taken by Mr. Wright to assert his claim.”

Upon the foregoing resolution being put to the meeting, all voted in favour except Mr. Eyre.

The following tenders for the supply of Dole Meal were then opened by the Chairman:
