Council Meeting – 2nd December 1908
One hundred and fourteenth meeting of the Parish Council
held in the School-room Great Longstone
on the 2nd day of December 1908
Present
Mr A. W. J. Eyre (Chairman)
Messrs J. Bridge, N. Orr, A. J. Skidmore, J. Wager and I. Shimwell (Clerk)
The minutes of the last meeting were read & confirmed
Post Office
A letter had been received from the Postmaster at Bakewell stating that it was proposed to reduce the hours of attendance at all the Country Suboffices and he wished to know if the Parish Council had any objection to Gt. Longstone Post Office being altered from “7.00 a.m. to 8 p.m.” to “8 a.m. to 7 p.m.”
It was proposed by Mr Skidmore & seconded by Mr Bridge that the Clerk reply saying that in view of the present late delivery of letters & as there are a number of visitors come to stay in the village during the summer months who wish to have their letters previous to going away by an early train and also for any telegraphic communication the Parish Council consider that it would be very inconvenient if the hours of attendance are in any way reduced & trust they may remain unaltered.
W Wrights Charity
A letter dated 25th Novᵣ 1908 had been received from the Charity Commissioners stating that the Trustees of W Wrights Charity (other than W Wrights Educational Foundation) had appointed Mr Hugh Edwards as Co-optative Trustee on the above Charity and that unless some sufficient objection be made the appointment will be approved.
Gilder Quarry
The Chairman stated that he and Mr Bridge had met Mr Wright on the 31st of Octᵣ at the Gilder Quarry to inspect the road which it had been proposed to alter, and to come to some decision respecting the ownership of the fences.
It was suggested to divert the road through the quarry by removing the boundary fence on the south, a sufficient distance from its original site, as to give Mr Wright a direct road to his land outside the quarry area, also to erect a gate at the end of the short lane leading from the highway, and to have the existing west fence repaired.
Mr Wright had sent a letter to the Chairman stating that he agrees to the above alteration and that he is willing to take the East and North fences on condition that the Parish Council take the West and new South fences.
It was proposed by Mr Bridge and seconded by Mr Orr and carried unanimously that Mr Wright’s proposal with regard to the fences be accepted, and that the above alteration and repair be made.
Owing to the Parish Council being unable to incur any expense in connection with the above works, the Clerk was instructed to write to the Rural District Council requesting them to undertake it.
The Clerk was instructed to acknowledge receipt of Mr Wright’s letter.
Educational Lectures
The Clerk was instructed to write to the County Council asking them to send terms and particulars for a course of lectures on the following subjects, vizᵗ — Veterinary work, Sick nursing, Laundry work, Cookery, and Ambulance work.
Signed
A. W. J. Eyre
Chairman
